The area now used for Racetrack Infield & Grandstand (shown above in 1917 during a military procession) was previously used for Multipurpose Events (car racing, athletic events, band performances and annual Exhibition opening ceremonies) resulting in year round activities. The Vancouver Exhibition Association (VAE) administration offices were housed under the grandstand.

Currently the racetrack and infield are underutilized. There are only about 70 days of live horse racing per year, and the racing facility occupies about 30% of Hastings Park.
