Sunday, Dec 20th: Annual Christmas Bird Count

This weekend, Vancouver Christmas Bird Count:

Sunday, December 20th, 8:00 am

This annual event is sponsored in Vancouver by Nature Vancouver. There are 28 Areas with mapped boundaries for teams to cover, including Hastings Park.

Jude Grass will be among dozens of birders heading out for this year’s count, which started on Dec. 14 and runs through Jan. 5. Vancouver’s count on December 20th is one of several in the Lower Mainland taking place over the roughly three-week period.

Starting in West and North Vancouver, the 28 Areas cover Vancouver and part of Burnaby and Richmond. Many teams and their Leaders have done this survey for many years. Every bird sighted of each species is recorded between the start time of 8:00 am and dusk. Results are then tabulated by a compiler and forwarded to Bird Studies Canada and the Audubon Society for eventual publication, and form part of a permanent record to show trends in bird populations. There is a competitive side of competing for the most species or an unusual species with other Counts such as Victoria and Ladner.

Please take part as a spotter, recorder, driver, Birder. Help the Count in an Area near where you reside. Your Leader will advise of the starting location.

For more information or or to be assigned to a Team call Adrian: 604.263.7957

Entry is free, a Post-Count Supper is $9.00 at the door at the same location as Birders’ Night Meetings.
